The problem
Scooter rental shops in Dehradun run on a paper register. Fares get worked out from memory, licences go in a drawer, and there is no way to see which vehicles earn, or to hold one for a rider booking ahead. We know because we rented the scooty first.
What we built
At the counter. Staff start a ride in under a minute: customer, vehicle, fuel level and condition photos, then a signed receipt and a timestamped history. Fares are never trusted from the browser. The server recalculates them, and closing a ride is a single database transaction.
For riders. Search by time and duration, see real prices from nearby shops, pay a small advance online and get a QR ticket to show at pickup. Rides can be extended from the phone. OTPs and receipts arrive on WhatsApp.
Under it. Every shop is walled off three ways: scoped queries, row-level security in Postgres, and a shop resolved from the signed session. Local search pages for the UPES belt help riders find it.
Outcome
In its first months of live operation, to October 2026, one shop in Dehradun ran its entire counter on Rentie, and the paper register went away.
